Day 45 - Mon, June 23 - Evening in Little Falls, NY - 0 miles

This is an extra edition for our evening in Little Falls, NY. After our group supper several of us decided to stroll down to the Mohawk River and Barge Canal to look at "Lock 17".

I guess - the "little falls" for which Little Falls is named.

Click on this photo to enlarge and you may be able to see the details of the original barge canal which passed over the top of the Mohawk River. It now runs parallel to the river.

We caught a sailboat just finishing up going through the lock. The water is being let out of the lock and the boat operator's head is just disappearing below the side wall of the lock.

The water rushing out of the lock as the gate is opened.

Another view of the water rushing out of the lock.

The sailboat has now reached the lower level and is about ready to leave the lock. The lock lowered the boat about 40 feet.

The sailboat passing beneath us as it leaves the lock.

The sailboat leaving the lock.

A display describing the lock. Enlarge it and you may be able to read the details.

A display showing this area of the Mohawk River.

A small hydroelectric plant in the same area.

Hope you can read this poster describing the hydroelectric plant.

A sculpture along the Mohawk River. The threatening sky behind the sculpture means we had better head back to the motel. It was thundering and lighting.

Bye for now,

Bob
