Day 22 - Sat, May 31 - Dodge City, KS, to Great Bend, KS - 86 miles - 800 feet climbing

Today was another long day with an 86 mile ride into cross and head winds again. Aren't the prevailing winds supposed to be from west to east? We were also threatened with rain at the start of the day but the sky improved as the day went on.

If one left-clicks on the above photo to enlarge it, you may see wind turbines in the distance. Guess they wouldn't be putting wind turbines out here if there wasn't a lot of wind.

Our first sag stop at 30 miles. We were ready for it after bucking the wind for 30 miles.

Lots of bicycles at the sag stop.

The halfway point on the historic route from San Francisco to New York City - 1561 miles either direction.

Our halfway point from L.A. to Boston will be down the road in three days near Topeka.

Another mid-point - this one of the long road between Missouri and New Mexico. If you click on the photo to enlarge it you should be able to read the sign.

A comical highlight today (and only because the rider was not hurt) was when Brendan, from England, was hit in the back of the helmet by a dead chicken thrown by a passing trucker and knocked off his bike (Must be redneck territory). Brendan received a standing ovation when he walked into the supper room. We surmised that this was not the trucker's first attempt at this as his aim was dead on - which points to premeditation and lots of practice.

This is the first day of the tour that we have begun to feel the humidity of the Midwest. Up until now, our sweat has stayed evaporated - causing a cooling effect. Now, we start to swelter.

There are still riders becoming sick from the food poisoning or whatever it is - it's a mystery.

Tomorrow we have a shorter ride of 63 miles to McPherson, KS. Consequently, we are starting an hour later at 8am.

Bye for now and thanks for the comments.
