July 2 - Motivation - Food for Thought

In thinking back over the last seven weeks and the several months of training before that, I am remembering motivational quotes that have applied to this XC endeavor.

First, are two quotes that Tracy, our tour leader, related to us - both at the beginning and again at the end of the tour. They are:

Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure... than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat. - Theodore Roosevelt

Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. - Calvin Coolidge

Then there was the monument inscription along our route in Lock Springs, MO:

Happy are those who dream dreams and are ready to pay the price to make them come true.

Following are other quotes that I have accumulated over the years:

Nothing happens unless first a dream. - Carl Sandburg

We don't stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing. - George Bernard Shaw

Fitness is a journey - not a destination. - Author unknown

When on two wheels, the journey is the adventure. - Author unknown

Suffering builds character. - Author unknown

Judge life not by the number of breaths you take but by the number of times that your breath is taken away. - Author unknown

Activity adds life to your years and years to your life. - Brian J. Sharkey

Most serious cyclists will agree with this quote:

A bad day on a bike is better than a good day doing about anything else. - Author unknown

I'm not sure about a headwind being a "friend", but maybe this quote is true to a degree:

The wind is your friend... It is your training partner when it is in front of you making you stronger and when it is at your back it gives you much needed rest. - Author unknown

More quotes:

If it's not a challenge, you're not working hard enough. - Herbie Hancock

Bye for now,
