Day 42 - Friday, June 20th - Erie, PA to Hamburg, NY - 78 miles - 2600 feet climbing

Our ride to Hamburg, NY, was one of our best rides of the tour so far. It had rained during the night so we had a cool, low humidity morning in which to bike - along with a light tailwind. We had smooth bike lanes along the roads for most of the day which took the stress off of riding close to traffic.

The night's rain had washed road debris (glass, small gravel, and shredded tire wire) onto a low area of the bike lane. Consequently, several riders experience flat tires - all along about a one-mile stretch.

We crossed into New York State, our 11th state-line crossing, 20 miles into today's ride. In the above photo, Randy (CA) and Don (NY) celebrate the crossing. Randy and Don are roommates.

Also celebrating the New York state line crossing are Bob (MA), Randy again (CA), Linda (MI), Peggy (AK), Mike (England), and myself (IA).

We rode along the Lake Erie shoreline for about 50 miles of today's ride. Above is a shoreline home with a vineyard in the foreground. We passed many vineyards today.

Another house along today's route.

If one left-clicks the photo to enlarge it, he may see a cave in the cliff wall along this shoreline and a deer drinking at the right-center shoreline.

A quaint little pizza stand along today's route.

A river gorge below a bridge as we passed into Hamburg, today's destination.

Tomorrow, we will ride 94 miles to Canandaigua, NY, with 5100 feet of climbing - quite a bit of climbing.

Bye for now.
