Day 43 - Sat, June 21 - Hamburg, NY to Canandaigua, NY - 94 miles - 5100 feet climbing

The 94 mile ride today was a long one with lots of climbing on long steeper grades. We had nice bike-lane shoulders for most of the day. The temperature was relatively cool for this time of year and we had light tailwinds for most of the day. There was a forecast for 30% chance of rain and it started to sprinkle and then lightly rain during the last 10-15 miles. I didn't waste any time after the light rain started and made it into the motel before I was more than a little damp. A thunderstorm and downpour occurred about an hour after I reached the motel. Most riders made it in before the downpour.

Not many pictures today because of the long ride and the threatening rain - Randy and I didn't stop very often.

We passed the 3000 mile point of the tour today - leaving only around 400 miles remaining. The photo shows myself, Paula (CA), Bill (IL), Randy (CA), Scott (IL), and Linda (MI). Paula and Scott were not riding today because of aliments and so were riding in the sag van.

Randy (CA) topping one of the long grades that we climbed today. The photo does not show the true extent of the grade as the bottom is hidden from view.

Another view of today's route. Again, the bottom of the grade is hidden.

A comment on yesterday's post from a friend back home pointed out that the photo of the cliff-like shore line with the cave in the cliff shows a deer drinking in the foreground. I hadn't noticed it. Thanks, John.

George, our 72 year-old rider from England, has turned pro. His goal is to beat everyone in. He came close yesterday, but today he missed a turn and rode a few extra miles.

Tomorrow's 68 mile ride to Syracuse, NY, will have 3200 feet of climbing. I am looking forward to visiting Syracuse as my sister, Janet, and her husband, Roger, live there. They are celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary today, although the anniversary is Monday. Their children, Nancy and David and families, are hosting the reception. Unfortunately Nancy and David will have left town to return to Wash D.C. and Denver, respectively, before I get in tomorrow. I will be able to visit with Janet and Roger tomorrow evening.

Thanks for the comments and bye for now,

Bob
