Day 12 - Wed, May 21 - Gallup, NM to Grants, NM - 68 mi - 1800 feet climbing

I lowered the resolution on my camera to "PC Resolution". That should help in my picture uploading problems of the past few days. It was taking minutes to upload them and some days they wouldn't upload at all. Hope that the viewing is still satisfactory. Remember, you can left-click to enlarge them.

Headed towards Grants, NM - New Mexico scenery.

Crusing down I40 with a right-rear tail wind. It made climbing to the Continental Divide more pleasant.

Myself and Warren (from Texas) at the Continental Divide.

Warren's Vision recumbent - for my cousin-in-law, Bob H's, benefit who also rides a Vision recumbent. Bob and I did a 150 mile day ride together during Ragbrai's Iowa sesquicentennial celebration in 1996.

Damien from Ireland at the Continental Divide.

Randy (from California) cruising down Route 66. We were on I40 for about ten miles today and the rest was on historic Route 66 which was low traffic and very pleasant.

We've seen lots of trains along I40 and Route 66 in New Mexico. They are generally hauling coal to power plants.

A train wreck that was left in place along the tracks. It is around thirty years old.

Flea Market anyone?

Today's fun began during the last 18 miles. The right-rear tailwind turned into extremely gusty right-front crosswinds that slowed our speed from 15-20 mph down to around 5 mph. Several chose to ride the van in.

The blowing dust/sand was so thick at times that we had to stop and wait for our path to clear. Gusts were in the 50 mph range.

The sign reads "Low Visibility" - no kidding!

Our destination for today - at last. What a relief to get out of the wind.

Ring around the tub - a dirty day!

An extra bed allows some organization of unpacking and packing.

Tomorrow we head for Albuquerque. Sounds like more of today's weather.

Bye for now and thanks for the comments.

Bob

What can I say about all the pictures other than WOW! I love them. That sure looked like a nasty wind. I can sure understand why some people jumped in the van. So now that you have hit the divide it's all down hill. Not really. You still have a long way to go but it is flying by. Keep up the great work.

Hi, you sure have had a tough.
ride today, strong winds and dust, it must be great just to lay in the hot tub. The pictures are great. My buddy George Garner is riding with you all, I hope that his 72 year old frame is standing up to the stresses of your daily routine. I wish you all a safe ride on this wonderful adventure.
Ray and Margaret Wilcox, in George`s home town, England.
